Raising By Position

Poker is a game of several thought processes that must come together with one answer in a short amount of time at the poker table. A poker player must be a mental juggler that keeps multiple factors in his mind as well as a human calculator that puts together the likely poker possibilities regardless if he is playing online poker or at a bricks and mortar casino.

Among the many factors that an online player must weigh when analyzing a raise from another player is the position at the table of that player that made the raise. Position can have a lot to do with the timing of a poker raise by a player and there are different poker rules of thumb regarding raises and position. Certain hands are likelier to get a raise from a player in an early position, (also known as “raising out of position”) at the table while other hands in poker have poker rules of thumb that indicate it is better for that player to raise “in position” (a late spot).

One of the rules of thumb both at online poker websites and live casino poker tables is that a raise by a player from out of position likely indicates strong hands. A player “in position” (late, such as the button) can afford not to raise as he can get a read on the other poker player’s hands at the table. A poker player out of position (early, such as under the gun) is more likely to raise with strong poker hands in order to force the players in later position to fold their hands into the muck as rules of thumb dictates that from an early position a player doesn’t want players in late position drawing on the cheap as the more players drawing on their hands are more threats to the good poker hands out of position.

Another factor in regards to poker position at the poker table for players to take into account is that a raise from a late position is more likely to be on weaker hands or even a bluff by a player as that player in late position at the table has the luxury of being able to see the acts of his opponents and can then act accordingly on his hands based on the relative strength or weakness shown by the other players. World Series of Poker and World Poker Tour Poker players will be seen doing this regularly.
